The worst problems we come across in our many years of exterior reconstructions throughout Colorado are often due to water damage and moisture issues. Faulty foundations, poor stucco installations, improper flashing and drainage systems are a home owners worst nightmare because once water is entering your home it doesn’t take long for the damage to be done. But while you’re busy worrying about the water coming into your home, another problem could be lurking in your backyard: mosquitoes. Mosquitoes love water almost as much as we, in the construction business, hate it. And that’s saying a lot.
Watch out for standing water in your yard
Standing water or swampy areas of your yard are not only a sign that you need to add some drainage, water is also an open invitation for hatching mosquitoes. And if you live in areas with lakes, rivers or other smaller bodies of water, chances are that mosquitoes are laying their eggs, and within 10-14 days your property will be swarming with mosquitoes.
“Fun mosquito fact: Only the females suck blood to nourish their eggs. The males feed on nectar alone!”
As well as we can take care of serious re-construction due to water damage to your home, or help provide proper drainage around your yard, patios or porches, you can take steps to make sure that all your money and all our superior craftsmanship doesn’t go to waste because you have a mosquito infestation. When we are done with our work, we want you to be able to enjoy your home, inside and out. So, here are a few plants and herbs you may want to consider keeping around your yard to make it unbearable for mosquitoes to thrive.
Planting mosquito repelling herbs in your Colorado garden
Sure, you can buy a bunch of citronella candles and have them around, but they don’t add much character or ambiance to your backyard. Fresh herbs and plants are much more attractive, and useful, than candles and toxic Deet.
Citronella, lavender, mint, and basil are all wonderful additions to any garden. They smell great and they can be used in teas and cooking, all while driving away bugs and making your garden a bug free environment…to a point, of course. I’m sure there will be a rogue mosquito with a nose plug braving the scent of citronella as they speed towards your ankle. But for the most part, these great herbs are great at keeping the bugs at bay.
“Helpful tip: Mint will help repel mosquitoes, but rubbing a fresh mint leaf on your bug bites can also help relieve the itching…and it’s great in a Mohito!”
